Volume: 20g

Made in: South Korea

What is it?: A leave-on lip mask that soothes and moisturises the skin.

Note: This contains vitamin C and antioxidants which is supposed to help with soothing and softening the lips? Apparently the ‘berry complex’ of raspberries, strawberries and cranberies are supposed to reveal more ‘supple’ lips……

What does it do?: Absorbs quick. Reduce flakiness.

Note: This contains a ‘Moisture Wrap’ technology that uses hyaluronic acid and minerals to form a protective film over the lips to lock in moisture. Also contains moisture-rich beta glucan which apparently forms an 8 hour time-release moisturising layer over the skin and locks in the active ingredients and mineral water in this product. (I don’t think this lasts 1 hour on my lips let alone 8 hours).

Good for: Dry lips or if you want to add some sheen or a pop of colour to the lips. Also for people who don’t like stick version lip balms.

Packaging: Plastic tub with a screw top. This comes with a spatula which I gave up using on the third go. It’s much easier for me to just stick my finger and apply – which is why I prefer a lip balm in stick format so I don’t need to use my fingers.

Do you see that this is waxy but very smooth looking?

NOTE: This lip sleeping mask does have a soft balm texture and does adhere to the lips well. This is meant to quickly be absorbed by the lips – which I’m not a fan of. I prefer my product to sit on my lips and form a layer. So I do need to re-apply this product.

Directions: Apply generously and leave on overnight. Gently wipe off remains next morning. Laneige state that putting a ‘generous’ layer of this mask at night should help reduce flakiness.

How I use it: I use this in the PM because I use an SPF lip balm in the AM. On alternate nights I use the Niod Lip Bio Concentrate, let that dry, and then apply the lip sleeping mask on top as it’s more moisturising and hydrating than the concentrate and seals it all in. I have no problem using this in the AM or as a lip balm by the way.

Key Ingredients: Lycium chinense Fruit Extract, Raspberry Extract, Ascorbyl Glucoside (vitamin C derivative) – antioxidants. Skin brightening: Ascorbyl Glucoside (interesting). Skin barrier-like ingredients: Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate. Soothing: Raspberry extract and Blueberry extract as well as Beta-Glucan.

You can see this product is meant to soothe and brighten as well as hydrate…but then it has things like alcohol and fragrance.

I don’t know why alcohol was so necessary to add in terms of if you want to keep the product hydrating. There is fragrance and there’s colourants in here. I feel the shea butter absolutely in this and the wax. I’m ok with applying this on the lips but I would not apply a serum with an ingredients list like this on my face.

NOTE: The Incidecoder has a full ingredient list breakdown HERE

Texture: You can feel the wax in your finger, but compared to vaseline it is less sticky and closer to a butter feeling. This doesn’t need much to melt on your finger or between your lips when rubbing in.

On the lips: This fills in the gaps and lines in my lips. It creates a smooth base. My lips don’t feel sticky or tacky, just smooth. This doesn’t have an oily/greasy feeling, it glides.

Can you see that this looks like a waxy melted butter on the skin? And you can see the pink-ish tint of the product.

It looks like it should be sticky / tacky but it’s not.

Fragrance?: Yes – smells like berries.

Good Under Makeup?: Yes, actually a good lip primer in my opinion.

How long have I been using this?: a year

The Effect?: Hydrated lips with a bit of a glossy look and they do look a bit pinker. I’ve had compliments after applying this i.e. ‘what did you put on your lips they look nice?’ – I don’t know if this has changed my lips in the long term, but at least it has stopped my lips from becoming chapped.

What I like:

  • Lasts so for so long! Pots can take up to a year to finish!
  • Moisturising (Contains Beta Glucan)
  • Hydrating (contains HA)
  • No irritation
  • The texture is the best thing about this product for me (smooth and not sticky!)
  • Gives a nice sheen and slight colour to the lips

What I don’t like:

  • Tends to ‘disappear’ quite fast even without drinking or eating (have to keep re-applying, this is both in the daytime and nighttime use)
  • Tend to transfer colour onto my pillowcase if I rub my face in my pillow while sleeping (if an adequate amount of product is applied)
  • Would much prefer this in stick form as a pot is (to me) unhygienic, I don’t like having to keep sticking my finger in
  • Very expensive for what it is i.e. a glorified lip balm

Overall Rating and Conclusion: 4/5 – The texture of this is wonderful. Yes it contains fragrance and all the things I don’t like, but the way this sits on my lips, the hydration and moisturisation it gives is nice! I took a point away because the biggest problem I have with this is that it doesn’t last on my lips (i.e. disappears even if I haven’t eaten) which is frustrating as I have to keep re-applying this product if I want the continued effects of it (i.e. the sheen and hydrated look). Also the packaging for me is unhygienic, and the spatula was annoying to use so I stopped doing it. I would prefer this product to be in a stick format like my blistex lip bam in the AM. I do think this is overpriced for what the product is i.e a tinted lip balm, but it does feel luxurious on the lips so I guess one is paying for that.

The Alternate version: Lip Glowy Balm HERE

Now I think that I would prefer to use this as I prefer things in a stick format. I have yet to try this, but I would hope that this would be the same texture to the lip sleeping mask, which I’m not sure of as usually when things are made in a different format/packaging, the formula does need to change a bit i.e. if it’s in a squeez-y tube, I think this lip balm would be more like a liquid-type format.

Would I repurchase?: Yes I have repurchased. I do think next time I would prefer to buy the Lip Glow Balm (above) instead of the pot format. I also would try to find a lip balm which doesn’t have fragrance or colouring so that I don’t mess up my white pillow case.

Dupe?: There is a dupe that a certain Jungkook from BTS was snapped wearing – it is the Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy lips – it is very small. I do have this actually (because of Jungkook…) and it’s nice but definitely stickier than the laneige lip sleeping mask. And this is more ‘see-through’ like vaseline is, compared to the Laneige which looks more opaque and ‘milky’.

But if you want a cheaper product which gives some colour to the lips and forms an occlusive layer on top (not as hydrating) then this could be a cheaper alternative. I would still prefer the laneige lip sleeping mask – the formula is elegant on the lips.

My Skin type: I am acne prone and have combo skin. My skin is usually tight where the cheeks and eye area is and the outer parts of my face. My T zone is oily. My skin isn’t a fan of thick/heavy formulas so I opt for lightweight formulas to prevent it from clogging up. My skin doesn’t like essential oils either and I try to avoid fragrance when I can.
