Hello all! – It is important to remember, when applying sunblock, to also cover the lips! However, for some, that may not ”taste” that great or sunblock could dry out the lips, therefore, I like to apply lip products that contains SPF (For instance, I’ve also previously recommended the Blistex SPF50+ Lip Balm REVIEW).
I discovered the Ultra Violette Sheen Screen SPF50+ Lip Balms and reviewed the set HERE and HERE. However recently, Ultra Violette updated their formula and re-packaged their sheen screen which, in this review post – I will be swatching, reviewing and showing you how the newer formula of the Sheen Screen Lip Balms/Glosses fair with the previous formula.
Available at: Cult Beauty: LINK / Sephora: LINK
These are Sheen Screens (Tinted Lip Balms) that aim to protect the lips from UVA + UVB Rays, while moisturising and hydrating them and providing some colour to the lips and shine.
Fragrance?: This is scented. This has a ”fresh peppermint scent” the company states, and yes, it does. I’m not the biggest fan of it, nor the effect of it on the lips i.e. that ”menthol” tingling type effect (was not in the previous formula).
How many shades?: 6 (see below for all the shade names and swatches).
Vegan?: No (Contains Beeswax)
Cruelty-Free: Yes
Packaging+ Ingredients:
Key Ingredients: Olive Oil + Vitamin E (Both Antioxidants, however olive oil is also an emollient).
Sunscreen Filters: Octinoxate (UVB) / Octocrylene (UVB + ~UVA) / Avobenzone (UVA – UVA1 + UVA2)
Emollients: Lanolin, Cocoa Butter, Beeswax, Shea Butter, Castor Oil, Sunflower Oil, Olive Oil, Soybean Oil, Alphaflow.
As you can see, the actual shape of these products are quite similar: Both are 15g. Both have twist-on caps However, with the previous formula the tube was see-through, so you could see the shade colour immediately.
With the newer packaging, you can see the shade colour by looking at the Ultra Violette Logo’s colour at the front. ”Bejewelled” (which is this shade) is similar to the packaging so it blends in a bit too well.
- It is easy to squeeze out product.
The tip / applicator: Old packaging (Left) VS New Packaging (Right)

The previous packaging was all plastic, whereas the new packaging has a rubber applicator (it moves around), making it easier to apply this straight onto the lips if you want.
The tip is also longer than the previous packaging. Also the screw/twisted neck was easier to get dirty/have dust ling to it, compared to this new packaging (as the product doesn’t smear all over the twisted cap bit as much).
Laneige Lip Glowy Balm VS Sleeping Mask VS Treatment Balm – Comparison + Review
Texture
Swatch Video Comparison: Previous Formula + Current Formula:
- As you can see, the textures of the old and new formula look very similar. They are glossy and because this is a deep, berry shade, it looks very saturated.
- In terms of texture: Both feel very similar on the lips. Initially it’s tacky but as you rub it in, this melts into the lips and is very smooth and doesn’t drip all over the place or smudge everywhere.
- As you can see; both products have colour. However, the newer formulation is less pigmented than the previous formulation.
Lip Swatch: Last Bite – No Product (Top lip) VS Product (Bottom Lip)

- As you can see, the lip is glossy and there is a purple-ish tint to the lips. This is the most saturated shade in this collection.
Swatch Comparison: New + Older Formula
- Hopefully you can see how the previous formula is more saturated (and gloopier / thicker). The newer formula has more glitter (more of a sheen to it).
The new formula’s texture is very similar to the previous formula. This new formula melts into the lips, is easy to rub along the lips, it’s smooth, glossy and moisturising. It does not feel sticky. It is actually very similar to the Pixi Collagen Lip Gloss in terms of its texture and wearability.
- Compared to the previous formula, the new formula gives that lip tingle effect when wearing.
All 6 Shade Swatches:
Blow out
Available at: Sephora: LINK / Cult Beauty: LINK
- As you can see, there is more glitter in this new formula. Other than that, the formulations feel similar. Blow out looks a lot more saturated as well.
Silk Pillow
Available at: Sephora: LINK / Cult Beauty: LINK
- Silk pillow has the least colour. It’s an ”icy” frosty balm / gloss.
Bejewelled:
Available at: Sephora: LINK / Cult Beauty: LINK
Bejewelled on the lips: Top lip = No Product) / Bottom Lip = Product

- As you can see, this is not very pigmented or dark on the lips. However, there is still some tint there, there is some colour and definitely some gloss. (Bejewelled is more of a natural shade).
Smoothie
Available at: Sephora: LINK / Cult Beauty: LINK
Crop Top
Available at: Sephora: LINK / Cult Beauty: LINK
- As you can see, Choc Top, Smoothie and Last Bite are not glittery like the other shades.
Blow out
Available at: Sephora: LINK / Cult Beauty: LINK
Blow Out – Lip Swatch: No Product (Top Lip) VS Product (Bottom Lip):

- You can see there is definitely some glitter on the lip. It is glossy. It feels smooth and moisturising.
- There is a slight tint on the lips (slight colour difference), but it is slight. It’s like a ”Your lips but better” effect.

All Hand Swatches + Comparison:
All available at: Sephora: LINK / Cult Beauty: LINK
Do these have a scent?: Yes. These all have a peppermint scent and feel to them i.e. They give the lips that cool, tingling menthol sensation that the previous formulation did not have,
As you can see, Silk Pillow is the most transparent. These look a lot more saturated on the hand compared to when applied on the lips. You would need to apply a lot of product on the lips in order to get this kind of colour payoff (please see the lip swatches to see what I am talking about. The most saturated is Last Bite, however Smoothie too.
Favourite shade?: Last Bite is the most pigmented, so I like it for its saturation. The rest very much look like; ”Your lips but better” glossy lip balms. Silk Pillow is my least favourite because it doesn’t have colour (on my lips).
TIP: What I like to do, to try to bring out more of the colour of these lip balms, is that I first apply a nude matte lip stick onto the lips, then I will apply this lip balm on top, which helps bring out the colour of the lip balms.
Overall Review + Conclusion:
What I like about these:
- These are definitely moisturising, just as moisturising as the previous formula. Yes they need re-application after eating (just like the previous formula).
- They feel smooth (like the Pixi Collagen Lip Gloss)
- Not sticky and not tacky (melts into the lips)
- Provides sun protection for the lips
- Very glossy and gives a ”your lips but better” look (some shades contain more glitter than the previous formula)
- I appreciate there are 6 shades to choose from and not just 1 or 2
- In the hot summer, the packaging is less-prone to spilling/making a mess due to melting
- Rubber tip makes application slightly easier
What I don’t like about these:
- Less saturated / sheerer than the previous formula (however, the darker you go, the more colour these give i.e. Last Bite + Choc top + Smoothie)
- If you wear a mask, this will smudge under it
- I’m not a fan of the peppermint scent, nor the tingly feeling I get due to it.
The lip applicator has a longer tip that narrows more than the previous packaging. It should make this easier to apply on the lips (but I use my finger regardless, as I like to make sure that there is an even application of this product on the lips in terms of colour. This applicator can’t smooth out the product all the way to the lip line and cupids bow as well as a finger does (in my opinion).
In Conclusion: SPF protection on the lips is important. Of course, you can just apply your regular face SPF on the lips, but sometimes that doesn’t feel comfortable or can feel drying on the lips. So, applying an SPF with a lip balm is a good idea; it can either be uncoloured like the Blistex lip balm (Review HERE), or you can go for a coloured lip balm, like the Ultra Violette Sheen Screen Lip Balms.
Overall: I am disappointed that these aren’t as saturated as the previous formula (and not as saturated as the Lanolips SPF lip balms, but those are SPF30 and not 50). HOWEVER, they do still provide a tint to the lips (especially the darker shades), and I will keep using them, as I don’t dislike the ”your lips but glossier + better” look. I appreciate that they are very glossy on the lips, they are definitely moisturising and they feel smooth, and most of all; they provide a high sun protection.
Would I repurchase?: Yes, as I can’t find many other alternatives with this kind of colour shade range, texture with this kind of high sun protection.
Dupes / Alternatives:
The Lanolips – Tinted Lip Balm SPF30: Swatches = Review: LINK – my issue is that these are SPF30 and not SPF50. Also the shade range isn’t as large as the Ultra Violette shade range.

My Skin Type: I am acne prone and have slightly dehydrated combo skin. My skin is usually tight where the cheeks and eye area is and the outer parts of my face. My T zone is oily. My skin isn’t a fan of thick/heavy formulas so I opt for lightweight formulas to prevent it from clogging up. My skin doesn’t like essential oils either and I try to avoid fragrance when I can.
