Lanolips – 101 Ointment VS 12-Hour Overnight Lip Mask: Complete Review and Comparison

Hello all!

As you know, I purchased and have been using for a long time (my sister has too) the Lanolips 101 Ointment (My Full Review is HERE) mostly as a lip balm (particularly in the PM as I use the Ultra Violette SPF50 sheen screens in the AM – Swatches + Review HERE). But then, Lanolips recently released their new 12-Hour Overnight Lip Mask and, as you know I like sleeping masks and I like Lanolips, so I wanted to give this Lip Mask a try!

In this Review Post; we’ll be swatching, reviewing, comparing and contrasting the Lanolips 101 Ointment vs the Lanolips overnight lip mask.

A bit about the brand: Lanolips is a skincare brand known for its innovative use of Lanolin in its products. Lanolin is a natural substance derived from sheep’s wool (so not vegan products, but they are cruelty-free) that is highly moisturising and emollient.

Why Lanolin?

  • It’s cruelty-free: It is a by-product of wool washing after shearing.
  • Acts as a breathable skin barrier
  • Lanolin can hold up to 400% of its weight in moisture, and mimics the skin’s own lipids quite closely, so it is very moisturising without irritating the skin.
  • Because it is similar to the skin’s own oils, Lanolin is recommended to help with burns and skin irritation.

Lanolin is an effective ingredient that helps both hydrate and protect the skin, creating a barrier that locks in moisture.

Summary of the benefits of Lanolin:

1. Intense Hydration: Lanolin is known for its ability to deeply moisturise the skin, making it an effective ingredient for treating dry, chapped, or cracked skin.

2. Skin Repair: Lanolin has soothing and healing properties that can help repair damaged skin.

3. Barrier Protection: Lanolin forms a protective barrier on the skin’s surface, helping to shield it from environmental stressors and prevent moisture loss.

4. Gentle and Non-Irritating: Lanolin is well-tolerated by most skin types, making it suitable for sensitive or delicate skin.

101 Lip Ointment

Available at: Cult Beauty: LINK / Look Fantastic: LINK / Boots: LINK / Selfridges: LINK

Volume + Price: £10.99 for 15g

Cruelty-Free?: Yes

EU allergen free?: Yes

Malassezia suitable?: No

What is it and what does it do?: This is a multi-use, nourishing, emollient balm that hydrates, repairs and protects dry / chapped sensitive lips (or skin).

Note: I have fully reviewed the Lanolips 101 Ointment is HERE

Packaging:

As you can see, this is a plastic tube that has a twist-on cap (which I drop a lot).

Ingredients: (Ultra Pure Grade) Lanolin: Lanolin’s molecular structure mimics the skin’s natural oils, which is why it’s moisturising.

Fragrant?: No.

Note: To see texture pictures, please see the full review of this 101 Ointment HERE.

Texture: This has a slightly sticky/tacky texture. This isn’t as thin, nor as smooth as the Pixi gloss or the Torriden lip essence. However, this means that this is very emollient, its very moisturising. It forms a barrier on top of the skin that keeps the lips both soft and moisturised (like a thicker, slightly stickier Vaseline that doesn’t slip away easily).

Video Swatch:

Pros:

  • Definitely Moisturising
  • Helped reduce and alleviate the Eczema on my hand (just in a few days)
  • Does not sting / irritate my skin
  • Takes a long time to use up product (since a little goes a long way as this is thick and moisturising)
  • Doesn’t immediately disappear (i.e. sits on top of the lips and ‘seals it all in’

Cons:

  • Not the biggest fan of the screw-top cap (I keep dropping it).
  • Can be a bit thick and sticky (especially when applying on the skin and not the lips)
  • Thicker than an average lip balm (i.e. more noticeable that you are wearing something)

My Overall Review + Experience: I think this is an excellent ointment that has really helped my lips, particularly in the dry weather. I don’t really apply it anywhere else on the body, as I find it quite sticky/tacky unless it’s on the lips. However, I cannot express how much this helped the irritation/itchy eczema I had on my hand (and it helped recover my hand in just a few days of using this). It may seem basic, but this product has made me very enthusiastic about Lanolin and its positive effects on the skin.

101 Lip Ointment Dupes:

  • The Aquaphor – Lip Repair Ointment, like the 101 ointment is unscented and is aimed at very chapped and cracked lips. [I do think the Lanolips Lip Ointment is still the more effective ointment however].

Available at: Ulta: LINK / Boots: LINK

  • The Pixi Beauty – Collagen LipGloss is thinner and much, much smoother (less sticky) than the Lanolips Lip Ointment. I think the texture is more pleasant on the lips than the Lanolips ointment. However I would recommend the Ointment moreso to very dry and chapped lips compared to this lipgloss/balm.

Available at: Pixi Beauty: LINK / Cult Beauty: LINK

  • The Torriden – Solid In Lip Essence is also unscented. It is Vaseline-based, but contains shea butter and olive oil to help smooth out and moisturise the lips (doesn’t contain Lanolin). It is very smooth and I would recommend.

12-Hour Overnight Lip Mask

Available at: Cult Beauty: LINK / Look Fantastic: LINK / Ulta: LINK

Price and Volume: £13 for 15g

EU allergen free?: No

Malassezia suitable?: No

What is it + What does it do?: An extra rich and buttery lip mask containing a blend of hydrating ingredients (Lanolin, Hyaluronic Acid + Ceramides) that is meant to be used overnight (to ‘rejuvenate’, ‘replenish’, soften and moisturise the lips while you sleep) .

Packaging: The same packaging as the 101 Ointment (same cap that I’m still not a fan of).

Ingredients: Lanolin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Copernicia Cerifera Wax, Ricinus Communis Seed Oil, Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil, Vanillin, Beeswax, Honey, Glyceryl Caprylate, Tocopherol, Glycine Soja Oil, Glyceryl Undecylenate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Water, Ceramide 3

Key Ingredients: Lanolin, Capric Triglyceride, Carnauba Wax, Castor Seed Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Beeswax, Soybean Oil (Emollients – All Skin softening and moisturising).

Vitamin E (Antioxidant) / Sodium Hyaluronate (Hydrating / Moisturising) / Ceramide 3 (Moisturising) / Honey (Soothing + Moisturising) / Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C that has ‘dubious’ ‘results on how effective it is).

Fragrant?: As this contains Vanillin and Honey, this smells like both ingredients (To me, this smells very similar to Carmex).

Texture / Swatches:

As you can see, this has a slightly brown tint to it (doesn’t tint the lips, just like the ointment).

Texture: This has a slightly sticky/tacky texture (the same as the ointment). This isn’t smooth like the Pixi gloss or the Torriden lip essence. You can tell this has wax in the base. However, this means that this is very emollient, its very moisturising. It forms a barrier on top of the skin that keeps this lip mask on the lips for a long time (I don’t think I feel it anymore in the morning when I wake up however, but my lips do not feel dry in the morning).

Pros:

  • Takes a long time to use up product (since a little goes a long way, as this is thick and moisturising)
  • Very moisturising
  • Fills in chapped lips
  • Other than Lanolin, this contains added moisturising ingredients
  • Stays on a long time (but it’s gone in the morning, however the lips don’t feel dry)

Cons:

  • Must enjoy the smell of Vanillin + Honey (smells like Carmex)
  • Must enjoy the thicker texture
  • Slightly sticky (due to the lanolin)

My overall Review + Experience: Overall, I have enjoyed this lip mask! It doesn’t feel as smooth as the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, however, because it’s so thick; it’s moisturising, a little goes a long way, and this does help soften the lips. I don’t reach for this in the AM, but I do enjoy using it as a sort of treatment as night. I do think those especially in Dry weather (and with very chapped lips) would enjoy this mask.

Overnight Lip Mask Dupes

How does this compare with the Laneige lip sleeping mask?: This is very different. Although both are waxy (have waxy bases), the Laneige is much thinner and smoother on the lips (more luxurious on the lips). However, it is tinted (contains colourants). It is glossier, smells nicer, (contains fragrance) and makes the lips look nicer (i.e. because of the slight colour tint and the gloss).

Both Lip masks are definitely moisturising, but I think the inclusion of Lanolin, particularly in the Lanolips Ointment and Sleep mask, makes them slightly more moisturising, and the ointment is especially more useful for those with genuinely very dry, chapped and even sensitive lips/skin.

Note: The Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is £21, whereas the Overnight mask is £13 (the ointment is ~£10).

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask + Overnight Lip Mask + Lip Glowy Balm Review

  • The Mediheal Panteno Lips Sleeping Mask is both smooth and moisturising (contains fragrance). It also contains Hyaluronic acid.

Available at: Mediheal: LINK / Yesstyle: LINK

  • The Needly – Lip Sleeping Mask is also in a tube and is fragrance and essential oil-free. contains many oils (e.g. Avocado and Olive) to moisturise and soothe the lips

Comparison:

Same (shared) Ingredients: – Lanolin

Unique Ingredient ONLY in the Lanolips 101 Ointment: – Lanolin Oil

Ingredients only in the Overnight Lip Mask:
– Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
– Glycerin
– Carnauba Wax
– Castor Oil
– Apricot Kernel Oil
– Vanillin (perfuming)
Beeswax
Honey
– Glyceryl Caprylate
– Tocopherol
– Glycine Soja Oil
– Glyceryl Undecylenate
– Ascorbyl Palmitate
– Sodium Hyaluronate
– Water
Ceramide 3

Overall, both products contain Lanolin (which is very good on its own). However the Lip mask contains additional skin-beneficial ingredients.

As you can see, the textures of these two products are similar. However the Overnight Lip mask is thicker than the 101 ointment. the Lip Mask also has a brown tint to it.

Both melt onto the lips quite similarly and have a slightly tacky texture when smoothing over the lips. The Overnight lip mask has a deeper colour.

Smell: The 101 ointment is unscented (doesn’t have much of a scent). The overnight lip mask contains Vanillin and honey (smells of both).

Wearability: Both are long-lasting (an ointment vs a sleeping mask). The sleeping mask is thicker and so, lasts longer on the lips.

Moisturisation: Both are very moisturising. The Ointment is ideal for dry-chapped skin/lips and harsh weather conditions. Whereas the lip mask is more formulated for the lips (to repair them) and soften the lips while you rest. [However, I think the ointment does almost just as good as the lip mask when I wear it overnight].

In conclusion: I like both products. Both of them moisturise my lips well! I personally am not a fan of the scent of the overnight lip mask however. Furthermore, I might prefer the slightly thinner texture of the 101 Ointment, as it is more comfortable to wear. I also think Lanolin alone is good enough to moisturise and hydrate the skin (like the ointment), but if you want something thicker and with even more moisturising/hydrating ingredients, then you may prefer the lip mask. The 101 ointment is multitasking (i.e. lips and body) whereas the lip mask is just for the lips (and is also slightly more expensive). I would recommend the 101 Ointment, especially to very dry and very chapped lips in dry, cold weather (or sensitised lips/skin).

Overall Rating: 101 Ointment: 4/5 Overnight Lip Mask: 3.9/5
