Stay Matte AF – Setting Spray

Where to purchase: Lottie London: LINK / Asos: LINK / Superdrug: LINK

Price: Ā£8.95

Volume: 80ml

What is it: An alcohol-free, mattifying setting mist (contains Witch Hazel which also acts as an astringent), to reduce skin sebum throughout the day and reduce shine.

Directions: ‘Spritz over the face before applying makeup (to prep the skin) and/or after makeup application (to set makeup). If a strong hold is needed, spray both before and after. For extra mattification, mixing some of this matte spray into your foundation before application will help mattify the formula. Shake before use.

Key Ingredients: Niacinamide (Anti-blemish + Brightening) / Witch Hazel (Antioxidative + Soothing) / Sodium Hyaluronate (Hydrating) / Panthenol + Aloe Leaf Juice + Cucumber Extract (Soothing).

Ingredients: Aqua (Aqua, Eau), Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Butylene Glycol, Pentylene Glycol, AMP-Acrylates/Allyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Silica, Phenoxyethanol, Polysorbate 20, Panthenol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Niacinamide, Rosa Rugosa Flower Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Ethylhexylglycerin, Propylene Glycol, Parfum (Fragrance), Tocopherol, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana Bark/Leaf/Twig Extract, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Sulfite, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, Geraniol, Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal.

Vegan?: Yes

Fragrance + EO Free?: No

Packaging: plastic bottle with a cap and a spray mechanism.

Texture: (See Swatch Video below) A watery/liquid mist that absorbs into the skin pretty quickly. Honestly I don’t find this mist uncomfortable to wear (it’s not very very mattifying however).

Stings the eyes?: This did not sting my eyes.

Is this sticky?: No.

Is this greasy?: No, as this formula is mattifying (a water that absorbs into the skin). This does not form a thick or sticky film on top of the skin.

Fragrance?: Yes this contains fragrance and smells really nice (perfume ingredients: Limonene, Geraniol, Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal).

Pros:

  • Easy to use packaging (I enjoy the spray mechanism) and comes with a cap
  • Appreciate the additional skin-beneficial ingredients
  • Lightweight
  • Doesn’t make my skin feel tight
  • Decent makeup hold

Cons:

  • Witch Hazel (Potentially drying and irritating for some)
  • Not extremely mattifying (but decent, especially in dry weather this is more comfortable than sprays that contain alcohol)

My Review + Experience: 3.4/5 – I appreciate the skin-beneficial ingredients added into the setting spray but (personally) I do prefer the alcohol-containing setting sprays if you really want that stay all day mattifying finish (I don’t wear makeup often so I wouldn’t recommend this technique for daily-use). I think this is great for those who don’t like aerosol sprays and want to set makeup without painfully drying it out.

Dupes: The Kryolan Makeup Fixing Spray is EXCELLENT! It’s a professional Makeup Brand setting spray so it’s very effective and made for even movie and stage makeup! Yes it does contain Isopropyl Alcohol, but it does ensure makeup stays on (so, not recommended for dry skins).

  • The Morphe Continuous Setting Mist is excellent

As you can see, this is glossy like a lip oil. I find that this gloss doesn’t last too long as my lips (especially in this dry weather) absorb this product relatively quick.

Pros:

  • Smooth texture
  • Not sticky
  • Moisturising
  • Not thick

Cons:

  • The scent is a bit ”tacky” vanilla
  • Product absorbs relatively quick (if your lips are dry) so the product disappears relatively quick (i.e. you don’t have a glossy look for long)

My Review and Experience: 3.8/5 – This is definitely a moisturising, smooth lip oil. Personally I like the ”tacky” vanilla scent, but I’m unsure if others would enjoy it.

Dupe: The Fenty Beauty Lip Oil has a very similar in finish and texture.

  • The Versed Lip Oil is also Vegan and feels similar.

  • The Pixi Botanical Collagen LipGloss is thicker than a lip oil, but it feels just as smooth and non-sticky like a lip oil (I’ve almost finished my Tube).

As you can see, this definitely has some colour and some shine to it. It’s not extremely glittery or chunky and feels quite soft when applying. This is also blendable and buildable on the skin.

Flex, Bare and Raw

Fire, Luxe Revenge

Pros

  • Soft, smooth texture (not dry and chalky)
  • Buildable and blendable
  • Pigmented

Cons

  • I would have preferred Glitters > Shimmers
  • Very slight fallout from the shimmers (add little-by-little and it shouldn’t do this)

My Experience and Review: 4/5 – Overall I have found this product versatile and easy to use! The colours blend well (I prefer the plain shades over the shimmers as I would have preferred glitter, but the shimmers are still good). I haven’t had issues with the wearability or pigmentation and as this is a nude palette, it compliments my Golden-warm skin tone nicely. The bare shade shows up on me the least but it’s been fine as a base shadow.

Dupes: The Dasique Chocolate Fudge Palette is very similar (nude palette) also with 9 shades and also has some shimmers.

Available at: Yesstyle: LINK / Stylevana: LINK

Price: Ā£18

  • And the Ciate Chocolate Palette also has 9 shades (and is vegan too).

Available at: Ciate: LINK / Look Fantastic: LINK / Asos: LINK

Price: (Currently) Ā£13.20

  • The Huda Beauty Nude Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette (Medium) is even more so pigmented (as well as the shimmers).

Conclusion

Overall, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this makeup brand! Is it the same quality as more high-end makeup to me? (i.e. Chanel, Dior, Anastasia Beverly Hills etc) not exactly, but I still have enjoyed using these products! I do like that the products are cruelty-free and most of them are vegan.

Out of all of these products, I would recommend the eyeshadow palette (I got a lot of use out of this!) and the lip oil as I use it regularly in the daytime (like a lip balm since it’s moisturising and less like a lip gloss) and then the Niod Lip oil in the evening (review HERE). The setting spray has been perfectly fine to use (not incredibly mattifying), it doesn’t ruin my makeup. The highlighter has also been fine to use (I like that it is blendable so I can achieve a more subtle glow).

These samples haven’t put me off the brand and I would try what else they have to offer. I would say they seem quite similar to Ciate London (If you want to try that out).

My Skin Type: I am acne prone and have slightly dehydrated combo skin. My skin is usually tight where the cheeks and eye area is and the outer parts of my face. My T zone is oily. My skin isnā€™t a fan of thick/heavy formulas so I opt for lightweight formulas to prevent it from clogging up. My skin doesnā€™t like essential oils either and I try to avoid fragrance when I can.
