Review: Dear, Klairs – Midnight Blue Clearing Water Cream

Where to purchase: Yesstyle: LINK / Stylevana: LINK

Price: £18.59

Volume: 50ml

Made in: South Korea

What is it?: A lightweight Gel Cream containing a patented Blue Calming Formula™ [Madecassoside, chamomile-derived guaiazulene and EGF peptides], Niacinamide and 8-types of Hyaluronic acid to soothe and hydrate (restore the skin’s oil-water balance) the skin, and overall condition it.

What does it do?: It is meant to provide a cooling sensation within 10 seconds of application (reduce hot or reddened skin).

Aims to: Hydrate / Soothe / Calm irritated skin.

Supposedly Good for: All Skin types (especially sensitive skins).

What I think: I would agree. I do think Oilier and Oily-Combination skins would prefer this over dry-er skins as this is slightly less oily and moisturising compared to the shea-butter containing and cult-classic Midnight Blue Calming Cream.

Moisturiser Recommendations! Beauty of Joseon, Avene, Dr G….

Directions: ”Apply an appropriate amount on clean skin. Gently pat to aid absorption.” (From the website HERE).

How I use it: I apply this in the PM after applying a serum as this ”locks it all in”. If my skin was very dry however, I would apply another moisturiser on top, as I would feel as if this wasn’t enough. However, as I have Oily-Combination skin, it is comfortable in the evenings. I require 6 pumps for both the face and neck as this starts absorbing/drying quite quickly once it comes into contact with the skin (hence why oilier skins may prefer this).

Key Ingredients: Niacinamide (Anti-blemish and brightening) / Madecassoside, Green Tea Extract (Soothing + Antioxidants) / SH-Polypeptide-9, SH-Polypeptide-11, SH-Polypeptide-1, SH-Oligopeptide-2, SH-Oligopeptide-1 (These are Growth Factors which improve the look of pores and fine lines of the skin – not recommended if you have a history of psoriasis or if your family has a history of skin cancer) / Sodium Hyaluronate, Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer (Hydrating) / Arginine (Natural Moisturising Factor) / Allantoin (Soothing).

Full Ingredients: Anthemis Nobilis Folower Water, Aqua (water), Butylene Glycol, Propanediol, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylic/Caoruc Trugktcerudem Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Carbomer, Arginine, Lauryl Glucoside, Polylglyceryl-6 Laurate, Allantoin, Glycerin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Myristyl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, Guaiazulene, Pentylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Madecassoside, Decyl Glucoside, Caprylyl Glycol, Hydorxypropyltrimonium Hyaluronate, Mentha Rotundifolia Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Leaf Extract, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Hyalurronic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Potassium Hyaluronate, sh-Polypeptide-9, sh-Polypeptide-11, sh-Polypeptide-1, sh-Oligopeptide-2, sh-Oligopeptide-1

NOTE: The Incidecoder have a full ingredient breakdown HERE

Texture: A smooth, lightweight gel cream that does feel cooling when applying onto the skin. It really thins out, but as it dries down, you can feel that it’s forming a layer on top of the skin and remains that way. It remains lightweight however. [See Swatch Video Below].

Sticky?: No.

Greasy?: No.

Balls up?: Did not ball up for me. But if you apply for instance, a facial oil on top or underneath this, it could potentially ball up.

  • As you can see, this looks like a gel cream with a blue tint to it. It is almost transparent (translucent).

Once spreading this into the skin, the blue tint starts to dissipate.

Hopefully you can see how lightweight and potentially hydrating this looks > moisturising.

Swatch Comparison: No Cream (Left) VS Cream (Right):

Does this Sting if the Skin has been Irritated / Sensitised by Shaving/Heavy Retinol Use?: No.

Summer or Winter?: For Oily Skins: All-year round. For Dry-er skins: The summer.

Layerable?: Yes (Didn’t seem to ball up for me).

Video Swatch:

  • As you can see, this has a lightweight gel texture to it, and does look hydrating (although not as moisturising as a more emollient cream like the dear, Klais Midnight Blue Calming Cream.

Fragrance?: This is fragrance and essential-oil free (Smells slightly plastic-y, but not heavily, and it disappears once rubbed in).

Good Under Makeup?: May collect in some areas under foundation / powder.

How long have I been using this?: 3-4 Months.

Will I use until Completion?: Yes.

How Long will that take?: ~2 Months (This only lasts 6 months after opening).

The Effect?: Cooled skin and hydrated skin, but not drastically moisturised for dry skin.

What I like:

  • Fragrance + EO Free
  • Cruelty-Free
  • Hydrating
  • Didn’t irritate / ruin my skin
  • Lightweight
  • Fast-absorbing
  • Great, convenient packaging
  • Wasn’t sticky/tacky for me

What I don’t like:

  • Not that Moisturising (for dry-er skins)
  • Not as intensely soothing as expected (but did not sting the skin)
  • EGF inclusion (See HERE)

Overall Rating and Conclusion: 4 (nearly 3.9)/5 Although this is thinner than a regular moisturising cream (and less moisturising), this has been hydrating, soothing and calming on the skin. I also really enjoy this packaging and have found myself reaching for this gel-cream when my skin needs some hydration > moisturisation. I do think this was made for Oilier skins rather than dry skins and would agree. It’s not as instantly soothing as I expected. However, it did not sting my skin (even when sensitised), and it definitely didn’t irritate or worsen my skin’s condition.

NOTE: A really good soothing Gel (for sensitised) skins is the SVR Sensifine Gel or the Bioderma Sensibio Cream (for Dry skins).

Would I repurchase?: Yes I would, as I think this works for my Oily-Combination Skin. In the winter, I would go for the Midnight Blue Calming cream as it’s more moisturising, but as this is unscented (and that is not)- I would choose this Gel-Cream over it.

Dupe?: The Acwell Real Aqua Balancing Cream is a gel cream and is very similar in texture (i.e. lightweight and hydrating). It is also Fragrance + EO free.

  • The Ordinary’s Natural Moisturizing Factors + Beta Glucan is a vegan + cruelty-free, fragrance + EO free gel moisturiser (albeit more sticky than the Dear,Klairs Gel, but is is more affordable). See the Review Video below to have a look at the texture (I compare it with the textures of the other newly released moisturisers from The Ordinary.

My Skin Type: I am acne prone and have slightly dehydrated combo skin. My skin is usually tight where the cheeks and eye area is and the outer parts of my face. My T zone is oily. My skin isn’t a fan of thick/heavy formulas so I opt for lightweight formulas to prevent it from clogging up. My skin doesn’t like essential oils either and I try to avoid fragrance when I can.
