What is it? + What does it do?: An SPF50+ PA++++, Lightweight, water-resistant Japanese Sunscreen Gel for both the Face + Body (for everyday use) and can be used for recreation and sport. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a white cast.

NOTE: The brand states that this can also be used while the skin is wet (i.e. just getting out of the pool or when sweating etc).

Supposedly Good for: All Skin Types.

What I think: Oily, Oily-Combo and those living in hot and humid weathers may prefer his the best.

Vegan?: No.

Cruelty Free?: Yes.

How long does it last after opening?: 12 Months.

Packaging: Plastic tube with a screw-top cap and a squeeze-y mechanism to squeeze out products. I like the tip, this doesn’t get messy.

Directions: As you would a typical SPF. Please re-apply your sunscreen every 2 hours.

How I use it: I applied this in the AM before working out and also I applied this during the day. It was fine during my workouts (not much balling up), but once out with my mask, this rubbed and balled up (My sister was the one who noticed/told me there was something on my face each time I wore this). Due to the texture of this, it was fine measuring out this product on my fingers before applying. I usually wear just this (no products underneath); to try and avoid any potential balling up or layering issues.

As you can see there is Alcohol included in this product, which is what keeps this formula light and easily-spreadable without a greasy finish.

Texture: First this feels like a lightweight gel cream that then blends out and dries down into a light silicone-based barrier on the skin (still breathable).

Sticky?: No.

Greasy?: No.

Balls up?: Under my mask: yes. Anything that rubs your face can cause this product to ball up.

  • As you can see this has an opaque texture/look. The colour disappears once rubbing this in and there is no white cast.

Hopefully you can see that silicone-based texture of this lightweight product. It does mean that this product, once dried; has a big potential of balling up under a mask/rubbing etc.

Swatch Comparison: No Product (Left) VS Product (Right)

Does this Sting if the Skin has been Irritated / Sensitised by Shaving/Heavy Retinol Use?: Yes.

Summer or Winter?: Spring-Summer for all skin types except Oily skins could also enjoy this in the winter.

Layerable?: As long as I don’t rub the skin too aggressively (tendency to ball up when rubbing too hard or with materials).

White Cast?: No.

Stings the eyes?: No.

Turns milky when sweating?: No.

Video Swatch:

  • As you can see, this has no white cast and isn’t sticky and looks lightweight.

Fragrance?: Fragrance + EO Free (smells like chemicals/alcohol (but that smell does dissipate once rubbed in).

Good Under Makeup?: It can work; but pat your makeup on (rubbing may cause balling up).

How long have I been using this?: 1 Month.

Will I use until Completion?: No (balls up under my mask so it’s difficult to wear).

The Effect?: Lightweight, breathable effect on the skin and no white cast. It’s easy to spread this along the skin. It’s not that hydrating or moisturising however.

  • Not sticky
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Not greasy
  • Didn’t worsen my skin condition

What I don’t like:

  • Balls up under my mask (i.e. balls up under materials)
  • Not very hydrating / moisturising

Overall Rating and Conclusion: 3.6 (nearly 3.7) /5 – This product doesn’t ball up as long as nothing is rubbing against my face (like a mask, or a scarf / collar etc), but it means I can only wear it when I’m not wearing a mask (which is a problem for me). I like everything else about this SPF however; how lightweight it is, how there is no white cast, how it spreads and absorbs and doesn’t feel sticky or greasy; But it’s the balling up issue (and potential layering issue under makeup) I ultimately have with this product that is a problem for me. Dry skins may not appreciate how this doesn’t really moisturise or hydrate the skin, but I think those in hot and humid weather with oily skins especially, may enjoy this product!

Would I repurchase?: Unfortunately no, as I don’t like any tendency or risk of my SPF balling up.

Dupe?: The Hada Labo UV Gel: Similar texture, but slightly more hydrating / moisturising (Swatches + Review: LINK).

  • The Anessa UV Sun Milk (More Oil control / Powdery): Does not ball up and has more oil-control. Swatches + Review HERE.

My Skin Type: I am acne prone and have slightly dehydrated combo skin. My skin is usually tight where the cheeks and eye area is and the outer parts of my face. My T zone is oily. My skin isn’t a fan of thick/heavy formulas so I opt for lightweight formulas to prevent it from clogging up. My skin doesn’t like essential oils either and I try to avoid fragrance when I can.
