Lanolips Lip Water / Lip Balm / Lip Tint / 101 Ointment – Swatches + Review

I purchased a few products from Lanolips just to check out whether the brand’s lip products are worth the money.

I have reviewed their famous 101 ointment which I have some great things to say about and some not-so-great things to say (Review HERE).

Lanolips is known for their use of the product Lanolin, which is a by-product from sheeps wool. so therefore their products are not vegan, but they are cruelty-free.

I purchased from different categories of their lip products. This includes their Tinted Lip Balms (also SPF30), Lip Waters (Glittery Glosses), a tinted 101 Ointment (to be used as a lip tint and cheek tint as well), AND their Lanostick (a Lip balm).

So lets see how they fared….

Lano Stick Original Balm

Volume: 3.3g

Price: £13

What is it?: A Lip balm containing Lanolin (mimics sebum to provide long-lasting hydration). Meant to hydrate + condition chapped or compromised lips.

Key Ingredients: Candelilla wax to provide a non-greasy seal on the lips, to lock in moisture. Mango butter (also to lock in moisture) and Vitamin E (preservative + antioxidant).

Ingredients: Original: Lanolin*, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Capryloyl Glycerin/Sebacic Acid Copolymer*, Cera Alba (Beeswax)*, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride*, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil*, Jojoba Esters (Simmondsia Chinensis)*, Aroma (Nat Flavour)*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Cera*, Magnifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Cera*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)*

Texture:

• As you can see, this is a solid lip balm that looks waxy. It doesn’t ”melt” into the skin as you drag it along but sort of keeps its form. The tube itself has a matte finish and feels nice to twist in the hand.

Swatch:

• As you can see, this doesn’t provide a very glossy, glowy or shiny finish. It simply provides that paste-like finish and protection.

What I like:

• The packaging is lush and I like the matte finish to it (easy to hold)
• I like stick balms (not as messy as tubes/pots)
• Doesn’t seem to melt in my bag/pocket

What I don’t like:

• Very potent smell of lemon and I don’t like this scent.
• Not really that moisturising (doesn’t last a long time either)
• Doesn’t melt into the lips when applying, feels more like rubbing a hard-ish balm onto the lips.

Overall Score: 2.9/5 – Not a failed product but also a product I wouldn’t repurchase (I would rather go for the Glossier Balm Dot Com HERE). I Don’t like the scent/flavour and I do prefer my lip balms to ‘melt’ a bit more onto the lips – to be malleable and easy to swipe. This isn’t particularly moisturising either and I would much prefer the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.

Tinted Lip Balm – SPF30

Shade: Rhubarb

Price: £8.99

Volume: 12.5g

What is it?: A Moisturising Lip Balm with a Sheer colour tint.

Description: ”Provides non-sticky hydration which lasts for hours and provides a glossy finish.” – I would agree with the hydration and the relatively glossy finish.

Key Ingredient: Lanolin (For moisturisation).

Ingredients: Lanolin*, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter*, Ricinus Communic Seed Oil* / Titanium Dioxide, Cera Alba/Beeswax/Cire D’Abeille*, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate(SPF), Benzophenone-3 (SPF), Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (SPF), Butyrospermum Parkii Butter*, Octocrylene (SPF), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil*,Tocopherol (Vit E) , (Nat) Aroma*, Prunus Amygdalus (Sweet Almond) Dulcis Oil*, Cocos (Coconut) Nucifera Oil* +/- Hydrogenated Polydecene, Hydroxystearic Acid, Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Red 28 Lake (45410), Red 33 Lake (17200), Yellow 5 Lake (19140), Red 6 (15850), Iron Oxides (CI77491) *Naturally Derived.

Note: There’s some Mica in here, some Titanium Dioxide too – both of these provide that brightening/shimmery effect.

Packaging (This is the same for all 3 Tinted Lip Balms)

• As you can see – this is a squeeze-y plastic tube with a tip with a rather large hole. It shows that this product does not leak out i.e. this is a relatively thick/viscous balm.

Now when I apply this: It’s easy to squeeze the product out (and accidentally squeeze too much product out).

Scent: Not a heavy scent, I can smell the almond oil. This doesn’t smell too sweet or overpowering.

Swatch:

– As you can see, this has a sheer tint. So in terms of the colour payoff – you need to apply quite a bit if you really want some colour on the lips. If you want just a nice ”your lips but better” look, then this provides that. Reminds me of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask in terms of the berry sheerness.

– Also, the texture of this is not sticky or tacky. It does glide over the skin – but Lanolin does have a unique ‘paste-like’ quality to it which this has.

What I like:

• I love lip products having SPF (This is SPF 30).
• It’s nice if one wants a simple glossy look with a slight tint
• Relatively moisturising

What I don’t like:

• Far too sheer for me. I was expecting the colour of the tube to fully immerse my lip in that luscious rhubarb tint

Overall: 3/5 – I thought this would be more pigmented than how it turned out to be. I am happy though that this is SPF30, so I will use this as a regular every lip balm, but not as a ”night out” lip product as it’s a bit too sheer.

Shade Comparison: Rhubarb VS Rose

Although Rubarb seems to be the darker shade of the two, it’s actually Rhubarb that is less pigmented.

Do you see how Rose has much more of a pigment compared to Rhubarb? It’s a bit weird because both are from the same line i.e. ”Tinted Lip Balms” but the finish is so different in terms of colour payoff.

Packaging: This is the same for all 3 shades. Plastic Screw-top lid

Do you see how it can get slightly messy (I.e. the product sticking to the sides of the tube tip?

Tinted Lip Balm SPF 30 – PERFECT NUDE VS ROSE

These are both Nude Shades but one is a pinkier tint (Rose) while the other aims to match the lips while providing a glossy finish (Perfect Nude). Both provide SPF30.

Tinted Balm SPF30 Rose:

Price: £8.99

Volume: 12.5g

What is it/Description: A 3-in-1 balm aimed to hydrate + nourish the list (for hours) while providing a nice tint to the lips and SPF30. Rose is meant to give the lips a ”sheer pink tint” and provide a ”glow”.

Swatch / Texture:

This really reminds me of the 101 ointment in terms of textrure BUT it’s not as sticky. Perhaps due to the oils, this has more of an oil-like paste to it rather than simply sticky lanolin. It makes the overall application of this a lot nicer and really helps lock in that moisturisation.

Perfect Nude (Right):

What is it?: Universal Lip Shade. This is a nude tint.

Ingredients: Lanolin*, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter*, Ricinus Communic Seed Oil* / Titanium Dioxide, Cera Alba/Beeswax/Cire D’abeille*, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate(Spf), Benzophenone-3 (Spf), Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Spf), Butyrospermum Parkii Butter*, Octocrylene (Spf), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil*,Tocopherol (Vit E) , (Nat) Aroma*, Prunus Amygdalus (Sweet Almond) Dulcis Oil*, Cocos (Coconut) Nucifera Oil* +/- Hydrogenated Polydecene, Hydroxystearic Acid, Mica (CI77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Red 28 Lake (45410), Red 33 Lake (17200), Yellow 5 Lake (19140), Red 6 (15850), Iron Oxides (CI77491) *Naturally Derived Ingredients.

Fragrance: Smells similar to Rhubarb i.e that Almond Oil smell is quite apparent, but it is a nice, non-overpowering scent. It does linger however so if you don’t like the scent then you may not like this.

Swatch / Texture:

As you can see, it’s got that creamy texture. This melts easily into the skin and when applying, you can see this has quite a bit of colour! Definitely not too sheer. Of course as the other Lanolin products, this has some thickness/viscosity to it. It’s not a watery product but more like an oily paste.

• As you can see this is a nude. Definitely less pink than rose. Also just as potent/pigmented as Rose. When applying, this product melts into the skin. It doesn’t feel sticky or tacky either.

Colour Comparison (Perfect Nude Vs Rose):

Overall: I personally like the scent of this, I think it’s not too overpowering and is quite a subtle mature scent (it doesn’t smell of vanilla or caramel)

I like the pigmentation (compared to Rhubarb) – I prefer more potent colours

Doesn’t immediately disappear (I.e. I applied this and then dabbed my lips heavily with tissue, a lot of the product remained BUT a lot of the colour was lost HOWEVER my lips didn’t feel dried out.

Conclusion: I really like these tinted lip balms. I like the SPF protection, however I would always prefer SPF50, like my Blistex SPF 50 Lip Balm (Review Here). BUT I like the colour payoff (it’s still very subtle, so don’t expect lipstick level of pigmentation here). But this does give off a ‘Your lips but better’ finish. And I do like the glossiness! The colour mostly disappears after eating however. And this does moisturise the lips. I prefer Rose over Perfectly Nude. I think the Nude matches my lips too closely where there is no colour provided WHEREAS Rose provides a nice pinkish tint I much prefer.

Rose Gold 101 Ointment:

Price: £13

Volume: 9g

What is it?: With he basis of the Original 101 Ointment – this is a Lip + Cheek Tint containing a ”Dewy rose-flushed” tint. This is also meant to also moisturise the skin.

• Lanolin, closely resembling the skin’s oil/sebum – this is supposed to deliver moisture to the skin.

• The finish is supposed to be ”dewy and slightly rose-coloured, to give the lips and skin a bit of a pink hint.” – I would agree this gives a very slight tint. I wouldn’t call it dewy however. I think the lip balms are a lot more gloss-y.

Ingredients: Lanolin*, lanolin cera (wax)*, cera alba (beeswax)*, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil*, mica*, aroma (flavour)*, tocopherol (vit e)*, benzyl alcohol*, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, tin oxide, limonene*, CI 77891 (titanium dioxide), CI 15850 (red 7 lake), CI 77491 (iron oxide)

Directions: Warm the ointment between fingers or apply directly onto the lips and skin.

Packaging:

• For some reason, I find it quite hard to squeeze product out of this? This has probably the thickest texture out of all the lip products in a tube here. I actually have to squeeze quite hard to get the product out. As soon as I apply it however, it does melt into the skin BUT not as much as the lip balms. This definitely has a bit more of a dry-er formula. Perhaps because it’s supposed to also be used on the cheeks.

• I really don’t like the hexagonal screw cap. I keep dropping it and it’s not easy to hold. I find that there’s a lot of empty space in this product/air which makes it harder to squeeze product out as well.

Swatch / Texture :

Do you see how it has slight golden iridescent pearls in here? Also this does look pigmented BUT it’s not really on the lips. It’s a bit of a dry-er formula than the lip balms (perhaps to apply onto the cheeks better). This has a buildable quality to it. The gold flecks don’t really appear on the lips and gives them more of a pink-ish look than a deep red one.

Scent: This has a menthol/peppermint scent and tingles.

What I like:

• Relatively Moisturising
• I like that this can also be applied onto the cheeks
• This has a buildable quality (useful for when applying to the lips or if you want a really subtle look).

What I don’t like:

• Very hard to squeeze product out (also lots of air in it).
• I don’t like this kind of cap – it’s a hexagonal screw top – hard to hold and keep dropping it.
• Smells like peppermint/minty (not the same scent as the balms).
• I personally prefer more pigmented products.
• Wish it had SPF30 like the lip balms
• Doesn’t melt into the lips + become too glossy

Overall: 3/5 – Not my favourite out of all these products. I don’t like the lid and the product is quite hard to squeeze out (it doesn’t melt as easily as the tinted lip balm). Also this really doesn’t have a strong pigment and I like pigment.

Lip Balm + Ointment Swatches

Lip Water

Shade: Lip Water

Price: £13

Volume: 10ml

What is it?: A Lip Hydration Fluid (A Liquid Lip Gloss with a brush-tip applicator and pearls).

Description: ”Contains Liquid Lanolin, Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin + Peppermint (the peppermint is POTENT). This is a non-sticky lip gloss with an underwater, holographic glow and resembles a lip serum.” This is supposed to be ”like a drink of water for the lips” – I would agree with these statements as the finish does look holographic and this is relatively moisturising and isn’t sticky.

Packaging:

• A tube with a screw top and brush applicator. It doesn’t pick up too much product however. I found that if I wanted my lips to look really glossy and ”wet” I had to keep dunking the tip in and re-applying. This also has that tingling sensation on the lips AND this does smell of limonene. The brush tip can be a bit flimsy as well.

Swatch / Texture:

• As you can see, this has some pink shimmer in it. It has a glossy finish. This is NOT sticky or tacky. Definitely provides that peppermint feeling to the lips (i.e that cooling sensation).

• The lips look glossy! Of course this will come off if you eat or drink as it remains quite wet on the lips.
• Gives the skin that ‘Tingling’ feeling (and smells like peppermint to me).

Golden Lip Water

Price: £13

Volume: 10ml

Description: Lip Water in Liquid Gold (warm toned Lip Gloss).

• This is a lightweight + relatively moisturising (and non-sticky) Gloss. Contains Peppermint oil to provide that ‘Refreshing’ feeling. Like the previous lip water, this can be applied alone OR on top of lipstick to provide shimmer. I’ve tried both ways and yes this works for both.

Ingredients: Liquid Gold: Lanolin Oil*, Lanolin*, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate*, (Nat) Aroma*, Tocopherol (Vit E)*, Mentha Piperita (Mint) Oil*, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glycerin*, Sodium Hyaluronate*, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Limonene*, Tin Oxide*, CI 77891, CI 77491, CI 77492 *Natural & Mineral Derived/Dérivés Naturels Et Minéraux. 

Packaging:

Exact same as the regular Lip Water with a flimsy brush tip.

Applicator / Tip:

As you can see these are brush-like tips. The Left is the Golden lip water (you can see it is a lot more glittery).

Swatch / Texture:

Do you see the little gold specks in the product?

What I like:

• Definitely makes the lips look glossy
• Doesn’t dry out the lips
• Not sticky or tacky

What I don’t like:

• Smells like peppermint
• Not a fan of the tingling sensation this gives the lips (doesn’t affect the look of the lips from what I can see).
• Don’t really like the flimsy brush applicator (which it was just a squeezey tube).

Overall: I like the lip waters, I’m not sure if I’m a fan of a brush applicator thought. I definitely would prefer it to come out in a squeezey tube. Therefore I have more control over how much product I want to come out as well.

Swatch Comparison:

Do you see the Golden Lip Water has more Golden Specks? The Regular Lip water still has glitter but those are more pearl/pink-ish.

The regular lip water is more cool-toned, has more of a pinkish tint whereas the Gold Water is more warm toned.

Overall: 3/5 – I think I prefer the regular lip water over the gold water because I like the pinkish/ice look, however both feel the exact same in terms of texture, wearability, application + scent. These definitely provide a gloss to the lips and DON’T dry out the lips. Not a fan of the applicators and would prefer them in the same sort of tubes as the Lip Balms (or something similar). Also not a fan of the tingling sensation or that peppermint-like scent.

Overall: I found these products pretty decent. They remind me of Glossier in terms of, these are not really pigmented products. Even the most pigmented lip balms (Rose and Nude) still aren’t that pigmented and colourful on the lips. So I think these are very wearable for everyday use and provide a nice pop of colour for the day. I wouldn’t call these evening lip products, perhaps the lip waters seem be the most ”outlandish”. All of these products do not dry out the lips, they all seem pretty hydrating/moisturising and although these get removed when eating / drinking, they do leave a residual hydrating/moisturising layer so even if you lost most of the colour, that moisturising layer can remain and stop the skin from drying out.

I think the lip balm was my least favourite (just not that moisturising or really buttery/melting into the lips and I didn’t like the lemon scent). And the Lip Waters I like but the packaging really isn’t my favourite (would prefer a tube) and didn’t like that tingling sensation or peppermint-like scent. The Rose Gold Ointment was good but if it had SPF that would be better and I think the lip balms were my favourite. The best colour pay off and SPF protection as well as lovely gloss and some pigment!

My Skin Type: I am acne prone and have slightly dehydrated combo skin. My skin is usually tight where the cheeks and eye area is and the outer parts of my face. My T zone is oily. My skin isn’t a fan of thick/heavy formulas so I opt for lightweight formulas to prevent it from clogging up. My skin doesn’t like essential oils either and I try to avoid fragrance when I can.
